Research continues to reveal the strong links between oral health and overall systemic health. Understanding these connections is crucial for comprehensive patient care.
The mouth is not isolated from the rest of the body. Mounting evidence demonstrates strong associations between oral health and various systemic conditions. As oral health professionals, understanding these connections enables us to provide more comprehensive care and potentially contribute to the early detection of systemic diseases.
Key Oral-Systemic Health Links
1. Diabetes and Periodontal Disease
The relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease is bidirectional. Diabetes increases the risk of periodontitis, whilst periodontal inflammation can worsen glycaemic control. Oral health professionals should screen for signs of diabetes and encourage patients with diabetes to maintain excellent oral hygiene.
2. Cardiovascular Disease
Studies suggest associations between periodontal disease and cardiovascular conditions including atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke. Chronic inflammation and bacteria from periodontal disease may contribute to cardiovascular disease development.
3. Pregnancy Outcomes
Periodontal disease has been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes including preterm birth and low birth weight. Pregnant women should be encouraged to maintain good oral health and receive dental care during pregnancy.
4. Respiratory Diseases
Oral bacteria can be aspirated into the lungs, potentially causing or exacerbating respiratory infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and hospitalised patients.
